In an Acupuncture session, Juli will ask about any symptoms you are experiencing, how you are feeling in yourself and take your pulse on both wrists.
She will ask to take photos of your tongue and sometimes your ears so she can work with these for her diagnosis. If you are interested, she will explain to you what she can see!
Ultra fine needles will then be gently inserted, often in your stomach, hands, lower arms, feet and lower legs initially. Juli’s needling technique is extremely gentle and patients often don’t realise how many needles she has put in! You may experience slight aching, heaviness, tingling or electric sensation traveling along your arm or leg. If any discomfort is experienced, it is usually mild. The needles usually remain in for 20 minutes, during which time you can listen to quiet music or a guided meditation. Overall, your treatment should be enjoyable and relaxing.
Acupuncture is a process, and it is recommended that you come for a course of treatment, usually beginning with 4-6 once-a-week or twice-a-week treatments, for the best opportunity to fine tune and harmonise your system.
Subsequent sessions could be two weekly/monthly and will involve taking details of your progression, reassessing your symptoms and noting any new health concerns.
The exact duration of treatment depends on the condition, your basic level of health, and how well you respond to acupuncture. The severity of the problem combined with the response to the initial 4 visits is also a factor in determining the number of acupuncture visits needed to resolve an issue.
If there is no change, at all, in the first 4-6 visits, then acupuncture might not be the best approach.
Juli’s work is about helping people to get back into balance, so sometimes she will recommend dietary and lifestyle improvements, to suit each individual’s particular needs.
Before treatments, please ensure you eat something light. Following treatments, please avoid exercise and rush, which may negate the treatment. Please wear something loose that can be pushed up to your knees and elbows. Clothes are usually left on.
After treatment, you may feel a little ‘spacey’. This is fine and normally a sign of a good treatment. If you do intend to drive afterwards, do allow a little time so you can come round gently before you leave.
Juli’s initial training is in the 5 Element Tradition and this is the basis of her gentle approach to acupuncture treatment.
